Kungsportsplatsen is a square in the city centre of Gothenburg, Sweden. The square was constructed 1852 and got its name after the King’s Port (the name literally means The King’s Port Place). The gate was the main entrance to the fortified city, which was and still is surrounded by a moat. When the city grew outside the moat and there was no need to defend the city any longer the gate was torn down. At Kungsportsplatsen there is a statue of king Charles IX, which was placed there 1904.

The Volvo in the picture is possibly a P445A from 1950, built by AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstäder (ASJ). These cars were equiped with a ladder-frame. The use of a separate ladder chassis provided Volvo with an easy solution in their desire to produce a suitable commercial vehicle. The availability of the bare chassis also allowed Swedish coach builders such as ASJ, Grip, Valbo and Nordbergs to build PV445-based pickup trucks, convertibles and specialized commercial vehicles. Later Volvo introduced their own commercial vehilcle, the Duett.

The company Axel Stiberg & Co. was registered in 1854 by Axle Louis Stiberg. Its initial activities were related to tobacco goods at the Östra Hamngatan 36 in Göteborg.

In 1910 they also launched a cigar factory, which became very succesfull and resulted into several large modernly decorated cigar shops. When the tobacco state monopoly in 1914 was introduced, a new business plan was introduced, namely Stibergs Livsmedelshandel (Stibergs Grocerystores), from which some what later in 1919 resulted in Stibergs Konservfabriker with Stibergs Livsmedelshandel at Kungsportsplatsen, Göteborg, as show and sales location. Stibergs Konservfabriker produced all types of fine charcuterie, meat and canned fish, as well as all kinds of delicacy-herring, anchovies, caviar and other products. Customers were found in Göteborg and throughout Sweden, later also with significant export business in North America, Australia, England and Denmark.

It was one of the last large-commission domestic projects designed by Richard Neutra, but it is also arguably one of his most architecturally noteworthy and famous homes.

It is “one of the most important examples of International style architecture in the United States and the only one still in private hands”, and in 2008 was offered for sale.

kaufmann desert house 00

This five-bedroom, five-bathroom vacation house in Palm Springs, was designed to emphasize connection to the desert landscape while offering shelter from harsh climatic conditions. Large sliding-glass walls open the living spaces and master bedroom to adjacent patios. Major outdoor rooms are enclosed by a row of movable vertical fins that offer flexible protection against sandstorms and intense heat.

A combined living and dining space, roughly square, lies at the center of the house. While the house favors an east-west axis, four long, perpendicular wings extend in each cardinal direction from the living areas. Thoughtful placement of larger rooms at the end of each wing helps define adjacent outdoor rooms, with circulation occurring both indoors and out.

kaufmann desert house 02

The south wing connects to the public realm and includes a carport and two long, covered walkways. These walkways are separated by a massive stone wall and lead to public and service entries, respectively. The east wing of the house is connected to the living space by a north-facing internal gallery and houses a master bedroom suite. To the west, a kitchen, service spaces, and staff quarters are reached by a covered breezeway. In the northern wing, another open walkway passes along an exterior patio, leading to two guest rooms.

The home was commissioned by Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr., a Pittsburgh department store tycoon as a desert retreat from harsh winters, and was built in 1946. It was made famous by the 1947 photos by Julius Shulman.

After Kaufmann died in 1955, the house stood vacant for several years. It then had a series of owners, including singer Barry Manilow and San Diego Chargers owner Eugene V. Klein, and had several renovations. These renovations enclosed a patio, added floral wallpaper to the bedrooms and removed a wall for the addition of a media room; additionally, the roof lines were altered with the addition of air conditioning units. In 1992, the home was rediscovered and purchased by a married couple: Brent Harris, an investment manager, and Beth Edwards Harris, an architectural historian; at the time it had been for sale on the market three and a half years.

kaufmann desert house 01

Today, many critics place the Kaufmann House among the most important houses of the 20th century in the United States, with the likes of Fallingwater, Robie House, Gropius House, and the Gamble House.[citation needed]

The Kaufmann house was included in a list of all time top 10 houses in Los Angeles, despite its location in Palm Springs, in a Los Angeles Times survey of experts in December 2008.

The Bailey House is located at 9038 Wonderland Park Ave in Los Angeles, CA 90046 USA. The Bailey House, or Case Study House #21, was registered as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #669, with the endorsement of then-owner Michael LaFetra, the Los Angeles Conservancy, and Pierre and Gloria Koenig.

In 1961 Volvo introduced this new sports car and made an indelible mark on the auto world. With Italian-influenced styling and a peppy 100 horsepower engine, the U.S. quickly became the car’s biggest market. No prior Volvo created a greater impression, and perhaps none has since. The P1800 got an extra boost because of its role in the sixties’ TV series “The Saint” starring Roger Moore, who played hero Simon Templar. The exact car he drove in the series was on display.

In early 1957 psychologist Walter Bailey and his wife Mary commissioned Pierre Koenig to design a 1,200-1,300 square foot house upon a level site nestled within a Hollywood Hills canyon. The Bailey’s were later described in Arts & Architecture magazine as a “contemporary-minded” couple with no children and an informal lifestyle. This represented the ideal program for Koenig to realize steel framings potential to achieve a truly open plan design that capitalized upon the vast spans that steel facilitated.

koenig-csh-21-1-002

By May 1958 Koenig had completed his construction drawings and begun collaboration with factories that were capable of producing the prefabricated steel bents. The bulk of construction took place from August to November of the same year, and by January 1959 the house was officially completed.

Case study house 21

In July 2006 Julius Shulman (at age 95) was invited to revisit Case Study House #21 to photograph it in its modern condition for the catalog of an upcoming auction at Wright 20. On December 3, 2006 the property sold for $3,185,600 to a female art collector from South Korea. This sale represented the second highest price of a Modern house at auction, just behind Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House, which sold for $8 million. Reports of the sale describe it as a “watershed moment” in the public acceptance of Modernism as art, rather than real estate.

Case study house 21-2

Shulman’s latest photographs offer a unique glimpse into the precision of Koenig’s restoration. Although Koenig’s completed house is nearly exact to the original design, subtle changes are present. Among these are a slightly altered tiling layout for the inner courtyard wall and a more elaborate fountain mechanism below. The can-like lights that are present throughout the space appear to have a darkened patina applied as compared to the original lacquered fixtures. Additionally, Cracchiolo apparently requested the introduction of semi-translucent glass on the bathroom walls for increased privacy.

Stockholm City Hall (Swedish: Stockholms stadshus or Stadshuset locally) is the building of the Municipal Council for the City of Stockholm in Sweden. It stands on the eastern tip of Kungsholmen island, next to Riddarfjärden’s northern shore and facing the islands of Riddarholmen and Södermalm. It houses offices and conference rooms as well as ceremonial halls, and the luxury restaurant Stadshuskällaren. It is the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet and is one of Stockholm’s major tourist attractions.

The small park between the building and Lake Mälaren’s shore is adorned with several sculptures, among them Carl Eldh’s ensemble representing the three artists August Strindberg, Gustaf Fröding and Ernst Josephson, as well as Eldh’s bronze sculptures “Sången” and “Dansen” (“The Song” and “The Dance”). To the south-east of the City Hall, facing Riddarholmen, is a pillar roughly 20 meters tall with a statue of Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson on top.

Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson (1390s – 4 May 1436) was a Swedish rebel leader and later statesman. He was the leader of the Engelbrekt rebellion in 1434 against Eric of Pomerania, king of the Kalmar Union.

The Monterey cypress “tree tunnel” is located at the Sir Francis Drake Blvd near Point Reyes Station, north of San Francisco in California, USA. It is a signature landscape feature that evokes some of the prestige that RCA placed in this profitable, historic operation.

Point Reyes is a prominent cape and popular Northern California tourist destination on the Pacific coast of northern California. It is located in Marin County approximately 30 miles (50 km) west-northwest of San Francisco. The term is often applied to the Point Reyes Peninsula, the region bounded by Tomales Bay on the northeast and Bolinas Lagoon on the southeast. The headland is protected as part of Point Reyes National Seashore.

Cypress Tree Avenue at KPH 500

The Cypress Tree Tunnel leads to the KPH Radio Station. KPH is a public coast radio station on the West Coast of the United States. For most of the 20th century, it provided ship to shore communications including telegrams (using Morse code) and marine telex service (using radioteletype). The station discontinued commercial operation in 1998, but is operated occasionally as a historic service – its signal can be tuned in throughout a large portion of the western hemisphere.

The Nobel Museum (Swedish: Nobelmuseet) together with the Swedish Academy and the Nobel Library, is located in the former Stock Exchange Building (Börshuset) taking up the north side of the square Stortorget in Gamla stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden. The Nobel Museum is devoted to circulate information on the Nobel Prize, Nobel laureates from 1901 to present, and the life of the founder of the prize, Alfred Nobel (1833–1896). The museum features a gallery where artifacts donated by Nobel Laureates are showcased accompanied with personal life stories.

The Nobel Museum opened in the spring of 2001 for the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize. Since, the great demand for guided tours from school classes have made the premises in the old town cramped for space. Ambitions were to relocate the institution to a more suitable building on Skeppsholmen (or more specifically the secularized church Skeppsholmskyrkan), an islet further east in central Stockholm already interlarded with museums and others related institutions.

According to the manifesto of the museum, the intentions are to be a “reflecting and go-ahead spirited memory of the Nobel laureates and their achievements as well as of the Nobel Prize and Alfred Nobel”. To achieve these aims, the museum offers exhibitions, films, theatre plays, and debates related to science; besides the regular book and souvenir shops, and cafés usually found in museums. The museum boasts exhibitions featuring celebrities including Marie Curie, Nelson Mandela, and Winston Churchill.

For visitors who want to bring a piece of the museum home, a souvenir shop is available that contains items about Alfred Nobel and the museum. One of the most popular items is Alfred Nobel’s gold medal made in dark fair trade chocolate. Another one is the Swedish “dynamite” candy that is flavored with jalapeño pepper. During 2011, the souvenir shop collaborated with the artist Artan Mansouri who made paintings that symbolized Alfred Nobel’s life. Besides that, the shop offers a lot of educational toys for children, books by and about Nobel Prize Laureates, and also unique items only found in the Nobel Museum shop.

Besides offering a Nobel Museum shop, there also is Bistro Nobel featuring Nobel chocolate, Swedish cakes, and also lunch and dinner. At the bistro, Nobel ice cream is served as well; this ice cream can only be found in the Nobel Bistro. A perfect match with the Nobel ice-cream is the Nobel tea that is usually served every year at the Nobel banquet.

Stortorget (Swedish: The Big Square) is a small public square in Gamla Stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden. It is the oldest square in Stockholm, the historical centre on which the medieval urban conglomeration gradually came into being. Today, the square is frequented by tens of thousands of tourists annually, and is occasionally the scene for demonstrations and performances. It is traditionally renowned for its annual Christmas market offering traditional handicrafts and food.

Located in the centre of the plateau of Stadsholmen, the square never was the stylish show-piece occupying the centre of many other European cities during the Middle Ages; it was created gradually, buildings and blocks around the square, still sloping west, occasionally added haphazardly. The exception being the Stock Exchange Building taking up the northern side of the square and concealing the Cathedral and the Royal Palace.

Today, Stortorget is the location of the Stock Exchange Building (Börshuset), which houses the Swedish Academy, the Nobel Museum, and the Nobel Library. Designed by Erik Palmstedt and built 1773–1776, it replaced the town hall that had occupied the lot for several hundreds years before and subsequently been relocated first to the Bonde Palace and then to the present Court House in 1915. The plan of the building, French Rococo in style, is a trapezium, the rounded corner of which greatly widened the flanking alleys. While the building is generally designed much like a private palace, the central pediment and the lantern-style cupola crowning the building underline its public status. The closed first floor, accommodating the Swedish Academy, contrasts the openness of the ground floor – a contrast enhanced during the restoration in the 1980s.

The present well on the square was also designed by Palmstedt and built in connection to the new Stock Exchange Building. It dried up in 1856 due to land elevation, however. It was relocated to Brunkebergstorg but moved back to its original location in the 1950s and is today connected to the city water conduit.

2015 – Riddarholmskyrkan at Birger Jarls torg in Stockholm (Google Streetview)

Birger Jarls torg is a public square on Riddarholmen in Gamla stan, the old town in Stockholm, Sweden.

The square used to be called Riddarholmstorget, but was in the mid-19th century renamed Birger Jarls Torg after Birger Jarl, traditionally attributed as the founder of Stockholm, and a statue of him was erected on the square in 1854.

The square is surrounded by half a dozen of palaces, today mostly occupied by various governmental authorities, together making not only the square, but the entire island a less than vital area isolated from the rest of the city by the artery traffic route Centralbron.

Just south of the square is the church Riddarholmskyrkan.

The Riddarholm Church (Swedish: Riddarholmskyrkan) is the burial church of the Swedish monarchs. It is located on the island of Riddarholmen, close to the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Sweden. The congregation was dissolved in 1807 and today the church is used only for burial and commemorative purposes. Swedish monarchs from Gustavus Adolphus (d. 1632 AD) to Gustaf V (d. 1950) are entombed here (with exceptions such as Queen Christina who is buried within St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome), as well as the earlier monarchs Magnus III (d. 1290) and Charles VIII (d. 1470). It has been discontinued as a royal burial place in favor of the Royal Cemetery.

It is one of the oldest buildings in Stockholm, parts of it dating to the late 13th century, when it was built as a greyfriars monastery. After the Protestant Reformation, the monastery was closed and the building transformed into a Protestant church. A spire designed by Willem Boy was added during the reign of John III, but it was destroyed by a strike of lightning on July 28, 1835 after which it was replaced with the present cast iron spire.

Coats of arms of knights of the Order of the Seraphim are in the walls of the church. When a knight of the Order dies, his coat of arms is hung in the church and when the funeral takes place the church bells are rung constantly from 12:00 to 13:00.

Brännkyrkagatan is a street at Mariaberget between Pustegränd and Kristinehovsgatan in Stockholm.

The street got its name by the street name change in 1885. Before that it was called “Stora (great) Bastugatan and Besvärsgatan”. Up until 1959 the street started at Södermalmstorg when Centralbron opened. Up to 1964 continued street after Kristinehovsgatan through current Hornsbruksgatan and Bergsundsstrand right up to the floating bridge at Liljeholmsviken, it was thus very long.

The steep slopes at Pustegränd previously called often for awkward slope. The slope or hill is Stockholm’s steepest street with an incline of 22%. It was used in the early 1900s as a place for the test run of cars and to perform brake tests for the certificate of competence for driving (current driver’s license). This showed in 1907 one of Sweden’s first female motorist, Alexandra Gjestvang, a break test of their competence. Next to her sat her father, General E.C. Gjestvang who was Sweden’s first car dealership. All around stood a curious crowd.
