Ytterby Gruvan on Resarö

October 28th, 2012

On our beautiful Resarö island, there has been a famous historic mine, unkown to many.

In this Ytterby mine, located on Resarö in Vaxholm Kommun, outside Stockholm nine elements were discovered here for the first time in history:

  • Yttrium (named after Ytterby)
  • Ytterbium (named after Ytterby)
  • Terbium (named after Ytterby)
  • Erbium (named after Ytterby)
  • Holmium (named after Holmia, the Latin name for Stockholm)
  • Scandium (named after Scandinavia)
  • Thulium (named after Thule, the Latin name for Scandinavia)
  • Gadolinium (named after the chemist Johan Gadolin)
  • Tantalum (named after the Greek mythological figure Tantalus)

Ytterby is the place in the world that has the most elements named after him, that is four.

In 1843 discovered the Swedish chemist Carl Gustaf Mosander two elements yttrium (Y), terbium (Tb).

Later in 1878 Swiss Jean-Charles Galissard the Marignac discovered a component called ytterbia from which latter element Ytterbium (Yb) was separated.

And finally in 1879 Swedes Per Teodor Cleve and Lars Fredrik Nilson discovered the elements erbium (Er), holmium (Ho), scandium (Sc) and thulium (Tm).

In 1989 the Ytterby mine was pointed out as a historic site by ASM International. At the mine entrance was installed a commemorative plaque.

The Ytterby mine on Resarö was opened already in the 17th century when quartz was mined for the iron works in the north of Uppland. In the 18th century, the mining of quartz was replaced by that of feldspar. It was the nearby porcelain factory Gustavsberg and Rörstrand that needed the raw material which was supplied until the mine closed down in 1933. But it wasn’t the feldspar that made the mine world famous. In 1787, the Swedish lieutenant Carl Axel Arrhenius from Vaxholm discovered some very heavy black rocks in the mine. He sent some samples to professor Johan Gadolin at the university in Åbo in Finland, which was a part of Sweden at that time. Gadolin analysed the mineral and found the first of the “rare earth metals” in the sample. Thanks to his discovery, the mineral was named Gadolinite´. The chemical formula was later determined to Y2FeBe2Si2O10, and it was Yttrium that was the new previously unknown metal.

Gadolinite can have slightly different compositions, so that Yttrium is replaced by other rare earth metals. With time, better methods of analysis resulted in the discovery of several more elements in the samples from Ytterby. Four of them got their names from the mine: Ytterbium, Yttrium, Erbium and Terbium. No less than eight of the 92 more or less naturally occurring elements were discovered thaks to samples from the mine. No other place on earth has produced that many new elements, and that is why this small mine is a must stop for all new Nobel Prize Laureates in Chemistry and Physics when they come to Stockholm. The mine has an other connection to the Nobel Prize as well. The porcelain that the dinner is served on comes from Gustavsberg, the factory that was the reason for the existence of the Ytterby mine!

Today, only some rocks are visible at the site, but if you own a Geiger counter you can detect that there is some radioactivity at the place. It is small amounts of Uranium and Thorium that gives the radioactivity, two elements that were not discovered here but that forms a part of the complicated element cocktail that is hidden within the mountain. The mine itself is sealed and has been used as a storage room for large amounts of oil, but it is now empty. The tower that you see on top of the mountain is a fan that ventilates the last fumes of the remaining oil from the old mine.

Volvo V60 Racing

October 24th, 2012

Will Volvo introduce a successor to the famous 850 racing?

Volvo V60 Racing Teaser

Volvo V60 Racing as shown at the Sao Paulo Motorshow

The Volvo V60 Racing will be based on the V60 wagon, sporting livery that pays tribute to the classic 850 model race cars that competed in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) back in the 1990s. The Volvo 850 Racing team came to be back in 1994 with Formula One driver Jan Lammers and Rickard Rydell behind the wheel of the Volvo 850 Wagon race car. The front-wheel drive racer was powered by a 2.0-liter, five-cylinder with 280 hp.

Unclear is still if the car will be entered in any race, in South America or in Europe (BTCC or STCC).

As promised, Volvo Cars Brazil unveiled the new Volvo V60 Racing on the International Auto Show in São Paulo. The sportswagon is a tribute to the legendary Volvo 850, who in 1994 competed in the British Touring Championship in Europe.

“The V60 Racing is our way to show our history on the racetracks, which began in 1928 with the Volvo Jakob OV4 and continues today with modern cars prepared by Polestar,” explains Paul Solti, president of Volvo Cars for Brazil and for Latin America. “And it is also a means to demonstrate the sports character of this V60, our Sportswagon.”

The Volvo V60 Racing received the painting white and blue, in allusion to the 850. The original design was slightly modified to follow the aerodynamic lines of Sportswagon. Receiving 18-inch wheels painted in gray, just like the model 850, with Michelin Pilot Sport tires as 235/40 R18. The suspension has specific competition springs, which reduce the height from the ground and enhance the performance of the Volvo V60 racing on the track.

Internally, all the sophistication fittings in the car were removed, with a Santantonio designed according to the standards of the FIA and stainless steel plates, which replaced the lining of the doors. The original R-Design seats were replaced for a competition seat with a four points belt was installed. The steering wheel is also competitive.

The engine that drives the Volvo V60 Racing is the T5, 2.0 turbo four-cylinder, direct injection and an output exceeding 250 hp. A six-speed automatic transmission and double clutch ensure the good performance of this sporty front-wheel drive.

If all goes well, the car will be entering the 2013 Copa Petrobras de Marcas.

Van der Nootska Palaset

October 18th, 2012

Van der Nootska Palace (Swedish: van der Nootska palatset) is a beautiful palace located at Sankt Paulsgatan 21 in Södermalm, Stockholm, Sweden.

Van der Nootska palatset at Sankt Paulsgatan 21B on Södermalm, Stockholm

The house was built in 1671-1672 by architect Mathias Spieler for the Dutch-born Swedish military officer Thomas van der Noot. The facade has pilasters and festoons and the middle part is decorated with mermaids in the sandstone. Two wings frame a small garden. The building was first used as a residence for various Dutch ministers. In 1740, a second building was erected that was used as a church for the Dutch Reformed Church. In 1770 it was made into a tobacco factory. In the late 1800s the building was in disrepair and was threatened with demolition.

The house was saved by Jean Jahnsson, owner of C.G. Hallberg, who turned it into a private residence. Architects for the renovation and expansion in 1903-1910 were IG Clason and Agi Lindegren. Jahnsson gathered a rich collection at the palace, including mainly Swedish silverware, a collection of hundreds of spoons from the 1400s onwards, porcelain, an unmatched collection of precious bejeweled gold boxes, Swedish miniatures, art furniture, Swedish engraving portraits and a library about much more than 100,000 volumes, including nearly complete collections of Swedish dramatic literature and Reformation writings, Swedish history books and documents etc. Jahnsson was hit hard by the Kreuger crash in the early 1930s, in which he was stripped of his wealth and forced to leave the Van der Nootska Palace and auction off most of the collections. Stensund Castle was sold to Carl Matthiessen, 1933, and the weapons collection auctioned off . The remainder of Jahnsson’s collections from Van der Nootska, which mainly consisted of the Stockholmiana Collection, were donated in 1942 to the Stockholm City Museum of Axel Wenner-Gren, who in February 1938, had bought the Van der Nootska Palace. The Stockholmiana Collection consisted of about 5000 images and about 3000 books and pamphlets.
From 1940 the building was used by Svenska Lottakåren (Swedish Women’s Voluntary Defence Organization) who used it as a headquarters. In 1943, the building was renovated by architect Rolf Engstrom. Since 1988, the building has been used primarily for conferences and banqueting and is now owned by the City of Stockholm.

Thomas van der Noot (1630 – 1677) was a Dutch military figure who served in the Swedish army. Born in the town of Brabant, he came to Sweden with his mother in the 1650s and married a Swedish noble lady. Thomas van der Noot became a Swedish officer, second lieutenant in 1655, colonel in 1668 and was Major General in 1677, and participated in the Swedish service in many battles in Europe. He was in knighted in about 1674 about the time he built the Van der Nootska Palace in Stockholm. He was killed in the Battle of Stettin on August 4, 1677. After his death the Van der Nootska palace become an embassy to the Dutch minister.

Skogskyrkogården

October 6th, 2012

Skogskyrkogården is the famous cemetery located in the Enskede, south of central Stockholm. Its design reflects the development of architecture from national romantic style to mature functionalism.

Skogskyrkogården was created after an international competition in 1915. The design of the young architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz was selected. Work began in 1917 on land that had been old gravel quarries that were overgrown with pine trees and was completed three years later. The architects’ use of the natural landscape created an extraordinary environment of tranquil beauty that had a profound influence on cemetery design throughout the world.

The crematorium, with its remarkable Faith, Hope, and Holy Cross Chapels was Gunnar Asplund’s final work of architecture, opened shortly before his death in 1940. In 1994, Skogskyrkogården was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is since then a major tourist attraction.

Almhöjden

Built by Lewerentz, the hill emphasises the gentle, romantic character of the landscape.
Visitors reach the top of the hill via a long flight of steps. The higher you get up the steps, the lower each step becomes. This is so that visitors are not tired out by the climb, instead feeling calm when they reach this place of meditation.

Seven Springs Way

At a length of 888 metres, the stunning Seven Springs Way runs straight from the meditation grove to the Chapel of Resurrection. Running along an old boundary line that existed in 1915 when work started on Skogskyrkogården, the path is intended for mourners to follow when attending a funeral service at the Chapel of Resurrection.

Granite Cross

An immense granite cross is the only thing to break up the horizon when visitors come through the main entrance and look out over the rolling, open landscape. The granite cross was designed by Asplund in 1939 and financed by an anonymous donor.

Chapel of Resurrection

Soon after the Woodland Chapel was inaugurated, it became clear that it was too small, so Sigurd Lewerentz was commissioned to design a larger stone chapel in the southern part of Skogskyrkogården. Completed in 1925, the Chapel of Resurrection has the look of a classicist temple.

The Woodland Crematorium

The Woodland Crematorium and its three chapels: Faith, Hope and the Holy Cross. During the 20th century, the pagan practice of cremation started to gain greater acceptance and so, in the mid-1930s, Stockholm’s Cemetery Committee decided to build a crematorium with three chapels. The idea was that Asplund and Lewerentz would work together on the project, but Lewerentz was sidelined and the commission went only to Asplund.

Resurrection by John Lundqvist

Visitors Center

1923 saw the completion of a staff and service building. The building was designed by Gunnar Asplund and has puzzled many people due to its, to say the least, unusual design. It is a playfully shaped wooden building on one level, entirely in green, made up of four square pavilions with very pointed, tent-like roofs clad in metal. The building housed a canteen and changing room for Skogskyrkogården’s staff, divided up so that the women had one side and the men the other.

Skogskyrkogården is connected to a metro station by the same name (see Skogskyrkogården metro station).

Volvo Collection by Editions Atlas

Last update: 2018-12-17 @ 19:47 hrs
Edition Atlas has released 90 models in the Volvo Collection!

Between februari 2012 and december 2018 I subscribed to the Volvo Collection by Editions Atlas. All models are in scale 1:43 and they give good value for money. Quality is not as good as the official models available at Volvo Car where models are made by Norev or Kyosho or the models from Minichamps, Motorart or Neo Scale models, but much better than Junior Driver / Cararama or APC. Some models seem to come from IXO Premium, the quality is about the same.

Many red Volvo cars in the Atlas Collection

Rainy saturday gave us an superb experience at the cinema, we watched the movie/documentary about Sixto Rodriguez, Searching for Sugar Man.

Sixto Rodriguez has been called “the greatest 1970’s music icon that never was”. Now with the release of an award-winning documentary about his incredible story, could it finally be time for the 70-year-old singer-songwriter to make it big?

ONE evening in Detroit in 1968, two music producers went to a dark and smoky bar. A man stood in the corner, playing a guitar and singing, his back to the crowd. Named Rodriguez, this singer was an eccentric, perhaps a drifter, with a lyrical style similar to Bob Dylan’s, but a mellower voice. The producers decided he deserved an album, which led to two, “Cold Fact” and “Coming From Reality”. But they both flopped, and Rodriguez disappeared back into the obscurity from which he had briefly emerged.

Although Rodriguez came to nothing in America, some bootleg recordings made their way to South Africa, where their melancholic defiance touched a nerve among white liberal youths during the apartheid era. “Every revolution needs an anthem,” says Craig Bartholomew-Strydom, a journalist. “‘Cold Fact’ was South Africa’s.” Rodriguez sold perhaps half a million albums in South Africa, where he was bigger than Elvis. Because the country was isolated by sanctions, South Africans had no idea that he was nothing anywhere else.

But some there noticed that they knew little about their hero. There were gruesome rumours about Rodiguez’s death, but not much else. So Mr Bartholomew-Strydom and Stephen Segerman, a jeweller, set out to learn what had happened to him. Their quest is the subject of “Searching for Sugar Man”, a documentary directed by Malik Bendjelloul.
