The Dongdaemun Design Plaza, abbreviated as DDP, is a major urban development landmark in Seoul, South Korea designed by Zaha Hadid and Samoo, with a distinctively neofuturistic design characterized by the “powerful, curving forms of elongated structures”. The landmark is the centerpiece of South Korea’s fashion hub and popular tourist destination, Dongdaemun, featuring a walkable park on its roofs, large global exhibition spaces, futuristic retail stores and restored parts of the Seoul fortress.

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) was designed by British Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, winner of the 2004 Pritzker Prize, with the concept of “Metonymic Landscape.”

Metonymy refers to a method of describing a specific object indirectly and, Hadid integrated historical, cultural, urban, social, and economic aspects of Seoul deduced from this method in order to create a scene of the landscape. Designed as a cultural hub in the historical district of Seoul as well as Korea’s largest fashion district, the DDP is composed of undulating surfaces that resemble the flow of liquid and allow flexibility in space.

The state-of-the-art BIM (Building Information Modeling), mega-truss (extra-large roof truss) system, and space frame system are the key features in terms of creating grand-scale spaces. According to Hadid, the fundamental features of her design were “transparency, porousness, and durability.”

Many ecological features, double-skin facade, solar panels, and recycling water system are included in the building.

Marina Bay Sands is located at Marina Bay in Singapore.

It is an integrated resort fronting Marina Bay, owned by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. At its opening in 2010, it was billed as the world’s most expensive standalone casino property at US$6.88 billion, including the land cost. The resort includes a 2,561-room hotel, a 120,000-square-metre convention-exhibition centre, the 74,000-square-metre The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands mall, a museum, a large theatre, “celebrity chef” restaurants, two floating crystal pavilions, art-science exhibits, and the world’s largest atrium casino with 500 tables and 1,600 slot machines. The complex includes three towers topped by a connecting 340-metre-long SkyPark with a capacity of 3,902 people and a 150 m infinity swimming pool, set on top of the world’s largest public cantilevered platform, which overhangs the north tower by 66.5 m. The 20-hectare resort was designed by Moshe Safdie architects.

Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a sovereign island city-state in maritime Southeast Asia.

It lies about one degree of latitude (137 kilometres) north of the equator, off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, bordering the Straits of Malacca to the west, the Riau Islands (Indonesia) to the south, and the South China Sea to the east. The country’s territory is composed of one main island, 63 satellite islands and islets, and one outlying islet, the combined area of which has increased by 25% since the country’s independence as a result of extensive land reclamation projects.

It has the second greatest population density in the world. With a multicultural population and recognising the need to respect cultural identities, Singapore has four official languages; English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil. English is the lingua franca. Multiracialism is enshrined in the constitution and continues to shape national policies in education, housing, and politics.

2022 – FOR Space on 18 Jin Hai Lu in Pudong Xinqu in Shanghai China

FOR Space is located on 18 Jinhai Road in Pudong New Area, Shanghai, China.

Located at Jinhai Road of Pudong New Area, the original site of FOR Space was a bathing place converted from an old factory building of monotonous spatial arrangement. It had fall into disrepair, lacking any distinct features of industrial building or historical value.

When refurbishing, Benzhe Architecture, based on a firm grasp of the seven independent buildings at the site, abandoned the original spatial pattern. A systematic spatial reconstruction allows a creative use of the space with flexible combinations of differential units, excepted to promote the sustainable development of surrounding areas, which reflects the active role of architectural design in urban renewal.

After a bold makeover, the left and right sides of the façade of the U-shaped main building now takes on a completely different look that the boringly flat walls are transformed into well-arranged three-dimensional space. A staircase of black weathering steel hanging on the outside of walls is like unrestrained thick branches sprawling towards different directions, which demonstrates the sense of rhythm and strong tension of new architecture and interprets the style of post-modernism.

New Jumen Road is a street in Shanghai where the (former) Naval Aircraft Manufacturing Building was located.

Close to this, the Expo Shanghai 2010, officially in full World Exposition 2010 Shanghai China, also called Expo 2010, world exposition in Shanghai, China, was held.

Expo 2010, officially the Expo 2010 Shanghai China, was held on both banks of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, China, from 1 May to 31 October 2010. It was a major World Expo registered by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), in the tradition of international fairs and expositions, the first since 2005. The theme of the exposition was “Better City – Better Life” and signifies Shanghai’s new status in the 21st century as the “next great world city”. The Expo emblem features the Chinese character 世 (‘world’, Chinese “shì”) modified to represent three people together with the 2010 date. It had the largest number of countries participating and was the most expensive Expo in the history of the world’s fairs. The Shanghai World Expo was also the largest World’s Fair site ever at 5.28 square km.

By the end of the expo, over 73 million people had visited – a record attendance – and 246 countries and international organizations had participated. On 16 October 2010, the expo set a single-day record of over 1.03 million visitors.

2022 – Green & Safe Cafe on Dongping Lu in Shanghai

Green & Safe Cafe is located on Dongping Lu in Shanghai, China.

The former French Concession has officially acquired one of the markers of a modern gentrified neighbourhood – a high-end organic supermarket á la Whole Foods. Owned by the same Taiwanese company behind Qi Min organic hot pot restaurant, Green & Safe on Dongping Lu is not just an organic supermarket, though; it’s also a cafe and restaurant.

The design of the restaurant’s expansive loft-style space on the second floor is attractive though, with dramatic lighting displays, an open kitchen and a choice of couches, chairs or stools to sit on. With this lacklustre menu and room for over a hundred covers they may struggle to fill all these seats.

Staff are enthusiastic and very eager to please. We can see the organic supermarket and café becoming a magnet for the yummy mummies of the FFC, but we can only hope they revamp the upstairs menu so we can enjoy the cuisine as much as the space. Either way, this opening is a welcome landmark in the unbounding growth of healthy organic choices in the city.

Edinburgh Place is a public square located in Central, Hong Kong, adjacent to the Victoria Harbour. The Hong Kong City Hall is located in the square. In addition, the Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier and Queen’s Pier were also located in the square before they were demolished in early 2007.

The Edinburgh Place complex, which included the City Hall and the Memorial gardens were designed by British architects Ron Phillips and Alan Fitch in 1956 for the most important civic functions of the city.

Edinburgh Place was deliberately kept as open space in the overbuilt city, freely accessible to the public, as this was considered an essential contrast to the city bustle.

Its openness meant that the square would occasionally be used as a rallying point for small marches and protests within earshot of legislators. For example, in July 1978, 2000 people rallied to demand the re-opening of the defunct Precious Blood Golden Jubilee School. Since October 1987, the Legislative Council has banned gatherings outside the principal LegCo building.
