1927 – Volvo ÖV4 at Ernst Grauers Volvo showroom on Brunkebergtorg 11 in Stockholm 🇸🇪

The story behind this photo is that Ernst Grauers, who was one of the first Volvo dealers from Stockholm bought the first series manufactured ÖV4 car. Grauers himself was present when the car left the factory in Göteborg. Together with Volvo director Assar Gabreilsson drove Grauers it to Stockholm. The new Swedish car aroused a great deal of interest when it was arrived on the tuesdag after Easter in April 1927 and put on display at the Ernst Grauers dealership building on Brunkebergstorg in Stockholm.

On Brunkebergstorg number 11, Ernst Grauers had one of the first Volvo dealerships (in the world). The first picture with the Volvo Öv4 was taken when the first model was shown for the first time to the public in Stockholm.

According to Volvo historions, after the first showing of the ÖV4 on April 4 in Göteborg, “the ÖV4 no 1 was driven to Stockholm a couple of days later by Assar Gabrielsson and Ernst Grauers, who had been appointed Volvo dealer in Stockholm, and the first public viewing of the car took place in his showrooms on April 19”. The second picture was taken in the Volvo Museum in Göteborg, where there the setting of the showroom is rebuilt. Also from the Ernst Grauers showroom in Stockholm.

1983 Tour de France

1983 Tour de France
Jacques Michaud (born 11 July 1951 in Saint-Julien-en-Genevois, Haute-Savoie France) won on 20 July 1983 the eighteenth stage in the Tour de France from Le Bourg-d’Oisans to Morzine over 247 km. In this stage, he climbed the Col des Aravis, the Col de la Colombière and the Col de Joux Plane first, and finished with an advantage of 66 seconds on the second placed cyclist, Ángel Arroyo.

1983 Tour de France
Lucien Van Impe (BEL) from the Metaurobili-Pinarello team in the polkadot jersey and Ángel Arroyo (ESP) from Reynolds slighty behind Michaud on the Col de Joux Plane to Morzine.

1983 Tour de France
1983 Tour de FRance winner Laurent Fignon: Initialy, Renault-Elf-Gitane team manager Guimard did not want to send Fignon to the Tour de France, because two grand tours could be too much for a 22-year old rider. When Hinault, winner of four of the five previous Tours, announced that he would not start due to injury, the Renault team was without a team captain. Fignon was added to the 1983 Tour de France selection for the Renault team, and the team decided to go for stage wins, with hopes of having Fignon or Marc Madiot compete for the best debutant category. After stage nine, the first mountain stage, Fignon was in second place, behind Pascal Simon, and he was allowed to be team leader. In the tenth stage, Simon crashed and broke his shoulder blade. Simon continued, and only lost little time the next stages. In the fifteenth stage, a mountain time trial, Fignon was able to win back so much time that he was within one minute of Simon. In the seventeenth stage, Simon had to give up, and Fignon became the new leader. In the next stages, Fignon was able to answer all attacks from his opponents, and he even won the time trial in the 21st stage. At 22 years old, Fignon was the youngest man to win the Tour since 1933.
Fignon later said that he was lucky to have won the 1983 Tour: if Hinault had been present Fignon would have helped him, as Hinault was the team leader.
With his round glasses and air of debonnaire, Fignon was a contrast to Hinault’s hard-knocks image. He earned the nickname “The Professor”, not only because of these glasses, but also because he was one of the few cyclists who had passed his baccalaureat exams.

The Promenade des Anglais is a celebrated promenade along the Mediterranean at Nice, France.

Before Nice was urbanized, the coast at Nice was just bordered by a deserted band of beach. The first houses were located on higher ground well away from the sea.

Starting in the second half of the 18th century, the English took to spending the winter in Nice, enjoying the panorama along the coast. When a particularly harsh winter up north brought an influx of beggars to Nice, some of the rich Englishmen proposed a useful project for them: the construction of a walkway (chemin de promenade) along the sea.

The city of Nice, intrigued by the prospect of a pleasant promenade, greatly increased the scope of the work. The Promenade was first called the Camin deis Anglés (the English Way) by the Niçois in their native dialect Nissart. After the annexation of Nice by France in 1860 it was rechristened La Promenade des Anglais, replacing the former Nissart name with its French translation.

For the local inhabitants, the Promenade des Anglais has simply become the Promenade or, for short, La Prom. On Sundays, bicyclists, babystrollers, and whole families can be seen out for a stroll along the Promenade. It has also become a favorite place for skateboarders and in-line skaters.

Aside from numerous events such as the annual Carnival, the Battle of Flowers, etc. that take place along the Promenade, the Promenade has its blue chairs (chaises bleues) and cabanas perfect for a lazy time along the Mediterranean and for contemplation of the azure water of the Bay of Angels (la Baie des Anges).

Marina del Rey is an affluent unincorporated seaside community and census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California.

The Fisherman’s Village offers a view of Marina del Rey’s dominant feature, the Marina, the world’s largest man-made small craft harbor with 19 marinas with capacity for 5,300 boats and is home port to approximately 6,500 boats. The harbor, the Los Angeles Times said in 1997, is “perhaps the county’s most valuable resource”.

The marina itself, a specially designed harbor with moorings for pleasure craft and small boats, is surrounded by high-rise condos, hotels, apartments, shops, and restaurants. The area also includes the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute, the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center, and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which regulates the Internet’s address and domain name systems.

The community is served by the three-mile-long (5 km) Marina Freeway (State Route 90), which links Marina del Rey directly to Interstate 405 and nearby Culver City.

The current lighthouse was built in 1876 and is still in operation with a few modifications.

The lighthouse was automated in 1982 and is now owned by the municipality of Giske. The galley and the tower are open for tourists from May through October, and the old keeper’s house has a café and an exhibition hall where artwork from local artists are displayed.

There is also a small historical museum inside the lighthouse tower.

Only a 30-minute drive from Ålesund, it is easily accessible for visitors and is one of the most visited lighthouses in Norway.

The Skovshoved Petrol Station (Danish: Skovshoved Tankstation) is a historic, still-operating filling station in Skovshoved at the northern outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark.

First opened in 1936, it was designed by Arne Jacobsen and is an example of the functionalist style typical of the time. It is Class A listed and was thoroughly restored in 2002.

The filling station was originally commissioned by Texaco but is now operated by Uno-X.

Arne Jacobsen Skovshoved Tankstation

Whilst the pumps and the roof are still used as petrol station, the cashiers building now houses a shop, selling ice-cream, with no relation to the petrol-station business and operation.

The exterior of the building is dominated by the projecting oval canopy, colloquially known as The Mushroom (Danish: Paddehatten). It offers shade and shelter for filling motorists but, illuminated from beneath, also doubles as a sign at night.

2010-11-12-204331jacobsen-texaco

The reinforced concrete building was faced with white Meissner tiles – signalling purity and cleanliness.

By this simple means Arne Jacobsen managed to build an impressive structure – one that was later to be considered among his finest functionalist masterpieces.

The petrol station was designed, under contract to Texaco, as a new standard model. But the model was never put into production. It is now a class A historic monument.

To this day, the petrol station remains the only one of its kind, fully intact and virtually unaltered since its erection in 1938. Only the petrol pumps are recent additions.
