Kyrkogatan is a street in the district Vallgraven in central Göteborgg. The street is about 600 meters long, ranging between Ekelundsgatan 10 and Östra Larmgatan 7. It is numbered from 1 to 60, and runs parallel to the larger Kungsgatan to the south and Drottninggatan to the north.

The name Kyrkogatan was probably set already with the foundation of Göteborg in 1621 (then called Kyrkiogatun), after its location beyond the Cathedral. Gamla Kyrkogatan was for a long time the name of the current Kronhusgatan, when the city’s oldest cemetery was located at the foot of Kvarnberget, west of Kronhuset at plot No. 6 in the corner of the current Torggatan – then known as the Kyrkogårdsgränden – and Sillgatan (current Postgatan).

Göteborgs domkyrka or Gothenburg Cathedral can be found at the Kyrkogatan, it is the seat of the bishop for the diocese of Gothenburg of the Church of Sweden.

Queen Sofía Palace of the Arts is the final structure built of a grand City of Arts and Sciences concept designed by the Valencia-born and internationally known architect Santiago Calatrava, which began in 1995. The building was constructed by a joint venture of Dragados and Necso and it was opened on 8 October 2005.

The building rises 14 stories above ground and includes three stories below ground. Its height is 75 metres, being the tallest opera house in the world. Under the expansive curved-roof structure, 230 m in length, the 40,000 m2 building contains four auditoriums:
The Sala Principal (Main Hall), The Auditorium, Aula Magistral and Martí i Soler Theatre.

The building suffered a number of incidents after its opening, which hampered initial productions. The first of these was the collapse of the main stage platform while it was bearing the complete set of Jonathan Miller’s production of Don Giovanni in December 2006. That forced the Palau to cancel the last performance of La Bohème and all of La Belle et la Bête, and meant that the management had to reschedule the remainder of the inaugural opera season. In November 2007, the entire cultural complex suffered a series of floods. The recently re-built stage platform was paralysed once again because almost 2 m of water entered the lower floors of the building and wrecked the electronics and the motors of the complex stage equipment, forcing the management to re-schedule the season again, delaying the premiere of Carmen and canceling the opera 1984.

Architect Santiago Calatrava Valls, born 28 July 1951 is a Spanish architect, sculptor and structural engineer whose principal office is in Zürich, Switzerland. He has offices in Zürich, Paris, Valencia, and New York City (where he now resides).

Calatrava’s projects have often been completed late and over budget, resulting several times in real or threatened litigation against him. The City of Arts and Sciences complex in his native Valencia ultimately cost around €900 million, almost triple what was originally budgeted, over a 13-year period. Ignacio Blanco, a United Left member of the Valencian provincial parliament, estimates that the city, financially strapped as a result of country’s ongoing economic crisis, still owes €700 million.

Lyckans väg is a street in Lorensbergs villastad or Lorensbergs residential area in Göteborg. The villas and a terraced houses are almost all built between 1913 and 1925. All but three buildings have stone with brick facades, and all contained large dwellings to 400 square meters. They are built mainly in the National Romantic style but also 1920s classicism occurred. The villas are built with 2 to 3 floors and almost all have facades of red or maroon brick.

The city plan for this area was established in 1913 and was drafted by Albert Lilie Berg, who was the first city engineer in Göteborg. Lilie Berg assumed Camillo Sittes ideas on a topographical features and enclosed places.

The villas are built on an area behind Gotaplatsen, between Viktor Rydbergsgatan and Näckrosdammen, where the terrain is very hilly with level differences of up to 40 meters. By using hand made bricks, granite and heavy walls in natural stone, it created a great affinity with the land and the local surroundings. The city plan also included some building rules regarding the height of buildings, the location and size adjusted.

The villa pictured above on the adress Lyckans väg 4, is called ‘Carlanderska villan’ designed by architects Arvid Bjerke & R. O. Swensson in 1913. Architect Arvid Bjerke is known from Göteborgs Konstmuseum 1919-1925 and Göteborgs Konsthall 1923 at Götaplatsen.

The villa was the private residence to SKF’s founder Axel Carlander. The family Carlander entered in 1914 the Carlanderska villa at Lyckans väg 4 in Lorensbergs residential area, designed by Arvid Bjerke.
Axel Carlander was also a member of the Board of Volvo AB between 1917 and 1926.

The villa had a gate in the garden during the Jubilee Exhibition in Göteborg in 1923, and was used to lead directly into the exhibition area, which was convenient both for family Carlander and for their royal guests who stayed with them. The villa was extended in 1930 and after Carlander wife passed away in 1961, the Hypoteksföreningen moved in.

Today, the building houses several appartments, and the street Lyckans väg is known at the most expensive street in Göteborg.

Brf Carlanderska villa was formed in 2011 and is located at Lyckans Route 4 in Gothenburg. The association’s property was acquired through demutualization in 2013 and consists of an apartment building on four floors with 6 apartments and 1 local. Tyska Skolgränd (Swedish: German School Alley) is an alley in Gamla stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden, stretching from Svartmangatan to Baggensgatan, and crossed by Själagårdsgatan.

Tyska skolgränd in stockholm wikipedia

The present name of the street, first appearing as Tyska Scholæ Gatan on a map from the early 18th century, is apparently derived from the German school in the late 16th century housed on number 8, Själagårdsgatan. The lot was thereafter bought by the German parish who had a first school building built in 1626, and a new completed in 1670. The building was subsequently enlarged and rebuilt at several occasions, the present buildings on the location mostly dating from 1887. The building, as it seem, was the one in general used by itinerant theatre groups in Stockholm during the 17th century. The German school was discontinued after more than 300 years, but a new German school, still in operation, was inaugurated on Östermalm in 1941.

Prästgatan or Priest street in Gamla stan, Stockholm is very quiet and peaceful. Unlike many other streets in gamla stan or the old town, there are here no stores, cafes or street musicians here. Neither particularly many choose to walk on this street. Often when you visit the street, it is completely deserted.

Just because of this, I can heartily recommend to stroll around here. Soak in the beautiful historic atmosphere of the Old Town in peace, without being disturbed by large tourist groups. A walk on the street gives a pretty good picture of what it might have looked like this in the past.

Prästgatan (Swedish: “The Priest’s Street”) is a street in Gamla stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden, stretching from a cul-de-sac west of the Royal Palace to the street Österlånggatan in the southern corner of the old town.

2013 – Prästgatan in Gamla Stan in Stockholm (Source: Björnidet)

The street was given its name in reference to the residences of three chaplains and a bell-ringer built there during the 16th century, the four small buildings were demolished in 1708 to give room to the parsonage still present. As the parsons of Tyska Kyrkan (“The German Church”) were housed near the street, the southern part of it was called Tyska Prästgatan (“The German Priest’s Street”) from the mid-18th to the mid-19th century while the northern part was called Svenska Prästgatan (“The Swedish Priest’s Street”). The name revision of 1885, resulted in the name Prästgatan being used for the street’s northern and southern extensions as well.

Stockholm City Hall (or in Swedish: Stockholms stadshus or Stadshuset) is the building of the Municipal Council for the City of Stockholm in Sweden. It stands on the eastern tip of Kungsholmen island, next to Riddarfjärden’s northern shore and facing the islands of Riddarholmen and Södermalm. It houses offices and conference rooms as well as ceremonial halls, and the luxury restaurant Stadshuskällaren. It is the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet and one of Stockholm’s major tourist attractions.

The small park between the building and Lake Mälaren’s shore is adorned with several sculptures, among them Carl Eldh’s ensemble representing the three artists August Strindberg, Gustaf Fröding and Ernst Josephson, as well as Eldh’s bronze sculptures “Sången” and “Dansen” (“The Song” and “The Dance”). To the south-east of the City Hall, facing Riddarholmen, is a pillar roughly 20 meters tall with a statue of Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson on top.

In 1961 Volvo used this location for a commercial with actress Christina Schollin and race driver Gunnar Andersson, who sings and talks about the benefits of Volvo.

Skoklosters slott

August 10th, 2013

One of the places that I wanted to visit for a long time was the Skoklosters slott near Uppsala.

Finally in the beginning of August I managed to do so and got a great guide tour through the castle and the surrouning gardens. The weather wasl also perfect to make some nice pictures.

Skoklosters slott between Stockholm and Uppsala

Skoklosters slott between Stockholm and Uppsala

IMG_7132

Skokloster slott is located near Lake Mälaren between Stockholm and Uppsala. It was built in the Baroque style between 1654 and 1676 by the wealthy military commander and count Carl Gustaf Wrangel. When Wrangel died, the castle passed into the hands of the Brahe family. In 1967 the castle and its contents were sold by the family to the Swedish government; the family still resides here but part of the estate is now run as a museum.

IMG_7142

IMG_7093

The castle is a monument to the Swedish Age of Greatness, a period in the middle of the 17th century when Sweden expanded to became one of the major powers in Europe. The death of Wrangel in 1676 meant that the castle was never truly completed. The Brahe family who inherited the castle after Wrangels death, had their own family castles and did not complete the interiors.

IMG_7107

IMG_7108

Thus the large banqueting hall remains in the same condition as the builders left it in the summer of 1676, complete with their tools.

Skokloster Castle is the only building in Europe with a complete 17th-century building site of equal authenticity. Some rooms in the castle are unchanged since the time when the castle was first built. Others have been preserved using the same materials and building techniques as used in the 17th century.

IMG_7102

IMG_7106

The interiors of the castle are considered to be especially well preserved, despite being made of original material much of which is more than 300 years old and in a building without modern heating in a cold climate. It is not known exactly why the building preserves textiles and furniture so well, but it is thought to relate to the unusually slow changes in temperature during seasons.

Visit my photoalbum for more photos of Skoklosters slott.

More information on Skoklosters slott can be found on their own website, skoklostersslott.se, Wikipedia or SFV.

Eskilstuna is a city and the seat of Eskilstuna Municipality, Södermanland County, Sweden with 97 692 inhabitants in 2012. The town is located on the River Eskilstunaån, which connects Lake Hjälmaren and Lake Mälaren.

The city grew enormously during the Industrial Revolution and became one of the most important industrial cities of Sweden, earning the nickname “Stålstaden” (“The City of Steel”). Aside from firearms, the city also produced cutlery, scissors, keys, machine tools and precision instruments. As a tribute to the steel industry, the figure of a steel worker is included in the city’s coat of arms.

Eskilstuna remains an important industrial city with internationally known companies such as Volvo Wheel loaders, main site for the heavy construction equipment division of Volvo, Assa (locks, keys), and Stainless steel manufacturer Outokumpu, Thin Strip Nyby in Torshälla.

The modern co-establishment of the Mälardalen University (Mälardalens högskola) has also given Eskilstuna an academic touch. The city also has a combined zoo and amusement park – Parken Zoo.

Sterlings Mattor AB was a carpet and furniture company in Eskilstuna, grounded in 1946 and closed in 1999.
