Lotsutkiken is situated high on a desert hill in the northwestern part of Smögen. The ship look-out point is based on a high concrete structure and is connected by a covered staircase connected to a small wooden house at ground level. The placement gave a clear view of the fairway, combined with proximity to the port’s pilot bridge where ‘lotsbåtarna’ pilot boats were moored. In 1878 it was moved from Kungshamn to Smögen and it continued as a lookout here.

Lotsutsikten Smögen

Lotsutkiken platform consisted of a simple wooden structure with a wooden deck that rested on a sharp wooden stake with four legs and was therefore known as “gallows”. As the years went by, the residential buildings crept by and fenced to finish the building so the view was obscured why 1935 had built the building that are here today. From 1969 was the lotsutkiken out of use because the operations were moved to Lysekil pilot station. Lotsutkiken has been declared an architectural memorial in 1997.

Maskinkajen is located in Eriksberg at Hisingen near the water, west of the Hotel 11. Here new houses and offices are created in recent years. Designed by Arkitekturkompaniet in 1998.

Eriksberg is an area on Hisingen where Eriksbergs Mekaniska Verkstads AB had their shipyard until bankruptcy in 1979. For over a century the area was dominated by shipbuilding but a crisis in the 1970s destroyed the industry.
Since the collapse of the shipyards, the area has been rebuilt into Gothenburg’s finest modern neighbourhood. The former machinery buildings have been renovated into a hotel with conference facilities. An 84 metre high gantry crane – the Eriksberg crane – stands as a remnant of the area’s shipbuilding past.

The Gothenburg Opera, Swedish: Göteborgsoperan, is the opera house in Göteborg. The Gothenburg Opera house is relatively new: construction started in September 1989 after significant local commitment in the late 1980s (with as many as 6,000 contributors to the new house) and it was completed with great speed. The building was inaugurated in October 1994.

The architect, Jan Izikowitz, shares his vision of the house: “The building should be possessed by an airiness that sends your mind soaring across the meandering landscape like wings of seagulls. Its shape should be inspired by its location, from the magnificent but elusive landscape with its light and open spaces, to the harbor’s more tangible technical constructions; the bridges gracefully suspended across the water, the transparent framework of the harbor cranes, the strength, softness and elegance of the ships’ hulls, the wings of seagulls and the flawless aerodynamic shape of sails”.
He reflects on the operatic aspect of the design: “The world of opera should also be visible in the architecture: the rear stage wall as a large set piece, the colonnade as a series of symbolic gates and stage openings, the fly towers as gigantic lighting towers, the shape and color of the auditorium as an allusion to old traditions”.

Kullaberg is a nature reserve situated on a peninsula of land protruding into the Kattegat in Höganäs Kommun near the town of Mölle in southwest Sweden. Kullen lighthouse, designed by architect Magnus Dahlander in 1898, is considered the brightest in Sweden, situated at the westernmost point of the reserve, guiding ships through this busy part of the Kattegat. Within this 75 square kilometre (18,500 acre) reserve are extensive hiking paths that criss-cross the ridge and provide access to dozens of beach coves nestled at the bottom of the cliff formations.

Mölle is a locality situated in Höganäs Kommun in Skåne, Sweden. It is best known for its scenic harbour and its location adjacent to the Kullaberg Nature Reserve. Its harbour, situated on the Kattegat Strait, provides services for marine fishing, watersports outings and tour excursions along the coast, especially the rocky shore of Kullaberg to the north. Fodor characterizes Mölle as “a small town set in spectacular isolation on the dramatic headland of the Kulla Peninsula”.

Skeppsholmsbron is located in central Stockholm, connecting Blasieholmen to Skeppsholmen.
It was the first ‘forging iron bridge’ to be constructed in Sweden, manufactured by Motala Verkstad in 1861. The first bridge to connect Skeppsholmen to the rest of the city was a wooden bridge on poles, simply called Holmbron and provided with a drawbridge, constructed by the admiralty in 1638-1640 after the Swedish Navy camp was relocated from Blasieholmen to Skeppsholmen. In 1822 the bridge was damaged in a fire, and subsequently replaced by a temporary pontoon bridge. Funded directly and still owned by the state, the present steel bridge was finally inaugurated in 1861.

In 1935 the bridge together with other building and structures on Skeppsholmen and Kastellholmen were classified as historical landmarks, thus prohibiting replacing the bridge or altering its exterior, a decision nevertheless reassessed in the 1990s.

Stora Badhusgatan is a street close to the harbor in Göteborg from Södra Hamngatan to Surbrunnsgatan.
The street was named in 1852 and was located between a former bathhouse and Keiller’s machine shop. Originally the street was named Bastugatan after probably the former Badstugubastionen near Verkstadsgatan and Skeppsbron. The name was changed to Badhusgatan probably due to Keiller’s construction of luxurious baths in the building wharf in the year 1830. The name may also have been aimed at the public baths, built in Surbrunnsparken in the early 1800’s.
