Sculpture @ Pilane 2014

October 18th, 2014

Sculpture at Pilane, as it’s called, is set on an ancient burial ground featuring 90 “judgment circles” that date back to the middle Iron Age (0-600 A.D.).

When the inland ice melted here 10,000 years ago, Pilane became an island of its own. It’s now part of the much larger isle of Tjorn and has been inhabited continuously since the Stone Age. This ancient landscape became the setting for contemporary art from 2007.

Pilane combines the remnants of past civilizations with contemporary art. It is emerging art and nature, and sometimes it is hard to see what is the art and what is the nature.

Bastugatan is a street on Södermalm in Stockholm. Stretching at Mariaberget in east-west direction, between Södermälarstrand and Hornsgatan and is about 600 meters long. In the east meets Bastugatan Pryssgränd.

Today there is only one Bastugatan (or Sauna Street in English) in Stockholm but previously there were many badstugor and sauna named streets in the Gamla Stan, on Norrmalm and Södermalm.

Iron Bridge over Bastugatan leads to Mariahissen 1880s.

Mariahissen is a building and a no longer active elevator at Södermälarstrand 21 on Södermalm in Stockholm. The lift is 28 meters high and connects Mariaberget with Riddarfjärden south shore.

Mariahissen at the foot of Mariaberget was built in 1885 and designed by architect Gustaf Dahl. He gave the building a neo-Gothic style with pointed-arch windows, battlements and turrets. Mariahissens pointy tower and walkway in iron truss crossing Bastugatan ends Bellmansgatan north. The footbridge was manufactured at Atlas workshops in Vasastan. The high brick facade dominates the South Mälarstrand eastern part, the building stands in a niche in the rock blasted to make way for the 28 meter high elevator.

Mariahissens task was to connect Mariaberget with Riddarfjärden south beach, where steamboats left to Riddarholmen. Three thousand people used to take this road every day. As the city’s communications developed, the number of elevator passengers went down and in the late 1930s the elevator was taken out of traffic. The house quickly became dilapidated, but in the mid-1970s, it was renovated and designed by Sune Malmquist. The public elevator is no longer in operation.

Artipelag is an art hall outside Stockholm in Sweden. The art hall opened in June 2012. The building and the surrounding landscape was designed by the late architect Johan Nyrén. The building covers an area of approximately 10.000 square meters and includes 3.000 square meters of art galleries and has 22 acres of surrounding natural scenery.

Artipelag is an international meeting point for art, good food, events and activities – beautifully situated in the Stockholm archipelago, on Artipelagstigen 1, only 30 minutes from the city.

The name Artipelag is a combination of Art, Activities, and Archipelago.

The art hall is founded on a donation by Björn Jakobson, founder and owner of the baby product company Babybjörn.

Notable exhibitions have included works by William Wegman and Candida Höfer. The artistic director of Artipelag is Bo Nilsson.

In August 2014, Volvo Cars had their 2015 Volvo XC90 launch here.

The building is comparable in size to Sweden’s largest state-owned museums and art exhibition institutions. Despite this, architect Johan Nyrén has managed to design a building in harmony with the natural surroundings, dressed in bevelled pitched-pine planks, and carefully located between the pine trees and the cliffs with a view over Baggen’s Bay. One of the fundamental ideas was that as soon as a visitor came into the entrance hall, he or she would be met by the four elements: fire crackling in the fireplace; earth and the rock on which the building rests; the clear air and the sparkling water that surrounds and frames the site.

Artipelag has much to offer for those who are interested in nature and architecture: the walkway leading up to the Sedum-plant-covered roof, the huge rock in the restaurant, and the beautiful sloping walls of the smaller art rooms. Many believe that Johan Nyrén, with his last work, will make international architectural history.

The Vasco da Gama Bridge (Portuguese: Ponte Vasco da Gama) is a cable-stayed bridge flanked by viaducts and rangeviews that spans the Tagus River in Parque das Nações in Lisbon, capital of Portugal. It is the longest bridge in Europe (including viaducts), with a total length of 17.2 km, including 0.829 km for the main bridge, 11.5 km in viaducts, and 4.8 km in dedicated access roads. Its purpose is to alleviate the congestion on Lisbon’s other bridge (25 de Abril Bridge), and to join previously unconnected motorways radiating from Lisbon.

Vasco da gama bridge

Construction began on February 1995; the bridge was opened to traffic on 29 March 1998, just in time for Expo 98, the World’s Fair that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route from Europe to India.

PonteVascoGama

The bridge carries six road lanes, with a speed limit of 120 km/h, the same as motorways, except on one section which is limited to 100 km/h. On windy, rainy, and foggy days, the speed limit is reduced to 90 km/h. The number of road lanes will be enlarged to eight when traffic reaches a daily average of 52,000.
