Kukkolaforsen Tourism & Conference Ltd. is a conference, experience and knowledge centre in the Torne Valley. The spirit of the region is presented by the rustic accommodation, the various sauna experiences, and the rewarding fishing opportunities.

Kukkolaforsen is a rapids in the Torne River on the border between Sweden and Finland. The rapids are located by Finnish Kukkola and Swedish Kukkola, 15 kilometers north of Haparanda and Tornio, next to National Road 99 and European Road 8. The rapids are 3.5 kilometers long and have a drop of about 14 meters.

Kukkolaforsen is a natural attraction in Tornedalen. In summer, whitefish are hauled out of the river, and the whitefish festival at Kukkolaforsen dates back to the Middle Ages and traditionally falls on the weekend after Jacob’s Day. This is when the river whitefish begins its migration from the sea up the Torne river. The fact that the fish’s spawning period is so time-bound is also the reason why its arrival has been noticed since the Middle Ages; the modern celebration first started sometime in the 1960s.

Kukkolaforsen was formed between the beginning of our era and the year 1000, as the land uplift made the area above sea level.

The Icehotel is a hotel rebuilt each year with snow and ice in the village of Jukkasjärvi, in northern Sweden, about 17 kilometres from Kiruna. It is the world’s first ice hotel.

After its first opening in 1990, the hotel has been rebuilt each year from December to April. The hotel, including the chairs and beds, is constructed from snow and ice blocks taken from the nearby Torne River. Artists are invited to create different rooms and decorations made of ice. Besides bedrooms, there is a bar, with glasses made of ice and an ice chapel that is popular with marrying couples. The structure remains below freezing, around −5 °C.

Two hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, you’ll find the world-famous Icehotel. Each icy room is an art installation showcasing the designs of some of the world’s most talented artists. Since 1989, the hotel – located in the village of Jukkasjärvi – has expanded to become a year-round hub for outdoor activities and inspired dining experiences.

With its breathtaking landscapes and proximity to the northern city of Kiruna, Jukkasjärvi has always been a popular summer destination. However, back in 1989, inspired by the Japanese tradition of ice sculpting, villager Yngve Bergqvist set out to create a wintertime attraction. His ice sculpting workshop, on the banks of the Torne River, was an instant success.

The following year saw the construction of Jukkasjärvi’s first ice structure, a 60 square metre igloo that served as an art gallery, cleverly dubbed ARTic Hall. Year after year, ARTic Hall was built anew, growing to an impressive 250 square metres. Then, one fateful night, a party armed with reindeer skins and sleeping bags asked if they might spend the night inside its icy walls. Thus, Icehotel – the first ice hotel in the world – was born.

Now, 32 years later, Icehotel is one of the world’s top attractions, drawing visitors from around the globe who are eager to tick this truly unique experience off their bucket lists.

As Icehotel continues to grow, it keeps sustainability at the forefront of its development. The hotel is working towards a goal of becoming CO2 negative, utilising sustainable building materials, solar panels to regulate temperature and ice sourced directly from the Torne river – returning to its source as it thaws each spring.

Sub-zero craftmanship and arctic artistry
Each year, as the river freezes over, the Icehotel is reborn. Starting in November, around 40 artists from varying countries and creative disciplines gather in Jukkasjärvi to bring their innovative designs to life. From water to ice to art, six weeks later, the transformation is complete. By now, more than 500 artists have contributed to the various incarnations of Icehotel – chiselling, scraping and shaping the ice into works of art reflecting their extraordinary artistic visions.

Wrams Gunnarstorps slott or Vrams Gunnarstorp Castle is a 17th-century castle located in Bjuv Municipality in Skåne County, Sweden. The estate is located in Norra Vrams parish on the south side of Söderåsen in northwestern Skåne.

It was originally built by Danish nobleman Jørgen Vind (1593-1644), who had the castle constructed starting during 1633. In 1838, it came into possession of Rudolf Tornérhjelm (1814-1885) who was a member of the Swedish Parliament. It was exchanged by the members of the Berch family in exchange for Össjö Castle and 17 barrels of gold. Current appearance of the castle dates to the mid 1800s. Vrams Gunnarstorp underwent a thorough restoration in the 1850s under the direction of the Danish architect Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll (1800–1856).

Västra hamnen is a neighbourhood of Malmö, situated in the borough of Centrum, Malmö Municipality, Skåne County, Sweden. Västra hamnen was an industrial area until the 21st century, when also the last factory closed down. In 1966, Kockums constructed the world’s largest dock in Västra hamnen. It is today the most exclusive and expensive neighborhood in Malmö.

Västra Hamnen is also known as “the City of Tomorrow”, and is the first district in Europe that claims to be carbon neutral. The district uses aquifer thermal energy storage system to heat buildings in the winter and cool them in the summer. Trollenäs Slott is located in a historically interesting place and is mentioned as early as the 1380s when the farm was owned by the knight Stig Aagesen Thott. The farm was named Näs after the headland formed at the confluence of the Saxån and Gullarpsån rivers. The property is inherited within the Thott family and in 1559 Thage Ottesen Thott built a castle building. This castle is depicted in a poster work from the 1680s and shows a stately Renaissance castle in brick. Thage Ottesen Thott and his wife Else Ulfstand are buried in the medieval church located in the castle park.

The property is further inherited within the Thott family until 1682 when Knut Thott enters into a swap deal with Helle Trolle, born Rosenkrantz, widow of the Councilor, Admiral and Viceroy of Norway Nils Trolle and owner of Gaunö Castle, on Zealand in Denmark.

The Trolle family originated in Småland around the areas around Bergkvara in Småland. Around the year 1500, the family belonged to one of the largest landowners in the north and Arvid Trolle built a currently large castle whose foundations can still be seen on Bergkvara. The family was represented in both Sweden and Denmark and is counted as both a Swedish and a Danish ancestor. The family has baronial dignity.

After Helle Trolle, the son Arvid inherits the property and after him the son Fredrik Trolle becomes the owner in 1720. Fredrik Trolle established a fideicommissary in favor of his grandson and name Fredrik Trolle who inherits the property in 1770. With the establishment of the fideicommission which also included Fulltofta, Näs was renamed Trollenäs. Fredrik Trolle also let his 3 daughters inherit property and capital with the promise that they would remember the name Trolle. Thus we get properties that are connected to the name Trolle. Trolleholm, Trolleberg, Trollesund, Trolle-Ljungby and the families Trolle-Bonde, Trolle-Löwen and Trolle-Wachtmeister.

Fredrik Trolle jr died tragically in a drowning accident in 1775 in which his younger brother Arvid inherited. He was childless and is followed by two unmarried nephews Fredrik Arvid and Nils.

In 1890, his nephew Nils Trolle inherits the property and begins an extensive renovation and new construction work. The castle from the 16th century had previously undergone a number of renovations over the centuries. The latest around the year 1800 when the castle was whitewashed.

Nils Trolle with his young wife Anna, born Leijonhufvud hired the famous Danish architect Ferdinand Meldahl. He created an impressive castle complex with medieval Scanian-Danish elements and a rich French Renaissance costume in brick. The wings were newly built to the original central building. The interiors are of the highest class and largely inspired by the baroque ideal of the heyday. The main architect Agi Lindegren’s main source of inspiration was Drottningholm’s castle, where he was later appointed castle architect.

After Nils Trolle, his son Ulf inherited the property in 1930 and then his son Nils. He son Ulf, is the current owner since 2010. The estate’s operations consist of the castle operations, an extensive land and forestry as well as property management.

Hotel Rusthållargården is located on Stora Vägen in Arild, Skåne in Sweden.

The history of Rusthållargården dates back to 1675.
The gravel from an old watchtower that was demolished at Krapperup Slott had to lay the foundation for the house which was then called Flundrarp 1 and was the largest farm in the village. Under Karls XI’s rule, it became a “rust farm” where the owner kept soldiers and horses for the king in the event of war, thus the farm became tax-exempt.

During the beginning of the 19th century, the owner of the farm received a contract from the lord of the castle at Krapperup with permission to run a pub business. The brandy was made in the “distillery” (the current stone house between the villas and the main building). Eventually he had the courtyard built and then also built the limestone staircase which still remains at the entrance from the road. The stones in this also originate from Krapperup Castle. The business eventually developed into a boarding house and in 1904 it was sold to Johannes Gudmundsson, the first same family to still own and run the business. Hotel Arild, as the name was then, was a homely, personal and cozy hotel. The restaurant had a Scanian inn atmosphere and the hotel became well known with a high reputation.

Arild is a locality situated in Höganäs Municipality, Skåne County, Sweden. It is located in the bay of Skälderviken in north-western Scania, approximately 30 km north of Helsingborg in Sweden.
