The Hôtel du Palais (originally the Villa Eugénie) is a hotel located beside the Atlantic beach in the resort town of Biarritz, on the Côte Basque in the French department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

It was originally built for the Empress Eugénie around 1855 as a summer villa. It was due to the visits of the imperial couple that the village of Biarritz developed into a fashionable resort. In 1880, the villa was sold and converted into a hotel casino. It was devastated by fire in 1903, but was lavishly rebuilt and enlarged within the original walls.

For many years the hotel attracted the international elite, including members of the European royalty such as King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, who paid several extended visits. Although the hotel later fell into disrepair, and closed for a period in the 1950s, it has since been refurbished and is again a luxury hotel. The hotel is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World.

After World War II, the Hôtel du Palais was forced to close for a period in the 1950s. It took a campaign by the mayor to obtain funding to refurbish and reopen the building, under the slogan “No Palace, No Millionaires”. Guests have included Coco Chanel, Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra. The façades and roofs of the hotel were listed as historical monuments on 24 December 1993. Once isolated, the hotel is now at the heart of the modern town of Biarritz, accessible from the lower end of the main shopping street through great wrought-iron gates that encircle the property.

As of 2012, the hotel had 124 rooms and 30 suites decorated in period style. The hotel includes excellent restaurants, a bar and a pool. The decor is still reminiscent of the hotel’s past as an aristocratic gathering place, and prices are high. The hotel is set among historic grounds, reached by a grand driveway.

During the Corona pandemie in 2020, the Hotel was mainly closed for a huge renovation.

The Fort of Guesclin was built on an island, the island of Guesclin accessible by sea, in Saint-Coulomb in Ille-et-Vilaine, between Saint-Malo and Cancale in France.

Perched atop a rugged rocky outcrop of an island some distance away from the shore, we had soon stopped for a closer inspection.

Fort du Guesclin is a tidal island, meaning that when the tide is low and the sea is out, the island is approachable on foot normally, this translates to a small sandy causeway leading to the island. When the tide is in and the sea is high, the land mass truly becomes an island, often only approachable by boat or air.

Due to ever changing weather conditions and the nature of the Northern French coastline, tidal islands are surprisingly common in the area. The most famous one nearby to Guesclin is Mont Saint Michel.

In 1207, the fortress was occupied by Jean sans Terre (John Lackland in English, Johan Sanz Terre in Breton), King of England, and was the site of bloody battles, during which Juhel de Mayenne drove away the English.

Bought in 1500 by Guillaume de Chateaubriand, it was then sold in 1589 to the Rieux family, before being demolished by the Catholic League (more info on the League can be found here) and reconstructed in 1758.

It’s still possible to see the base of six or seven turrets and a well thirty metres deep and three metres wide. The buildings have now been transformed into a holiday home.

Today the fortress is a holiday home. Having been bought, in the 18th century by ordinary citizens, it was transformed into a holiday home. During WWII, the island was briefly occupied and utilised as a German military base.

After the war, the fort was sold to the popular poet and composer Léo Ferré- the site itself was where he composed many of his songs. Ferré lived on the site until 1968 before it was abandoned. Purchased in 1996 by the Porcher family, the fort has once again been restored and is used as a holiday home.

Launched at the abandonment following a share of difficult goods, the fort was rocketed in 1996 to the heirs of Léo Ferré by the Porcher family, who restored the building and maintained it since this exceptional residence.

Vestre Fjordpark is seperated into different areas called Stranden, Tangen, Kilen, Fladen, Krattet and Skoven.

Stranden (the beach) is a large bathing area with sand bottom, a 50 m basin and diving board basin, diving board tower, and climbing wall. You can enjoy the sun on the areas on the roofs or the grass areas (with several sections in cover).

The areal between the Fjord and the bathing area is called Tangen, and from here kayaks are launched. In the Fjord there is a floating bridge, from where the kayaks can also be launched, or you can swim from the Open Water-sections.

Kilen is characterised by the open grass area and various opportunities for activity, e.g. throwing frisbees, parkour, street work-out, running on the pathways, foot- and handball, streetbasket and beachvolley. The calm area, Fladen, consists of a large grass area with a bonfire place, which is also useful for larger social arrangements.

Krattet is different from the other open areas, as it consists of narrow pathways and poles with nesting boxes for kestrels. The forest on the hill change into a bright forest of oak trees, which to the north is defined by flowery woods.

There are covered tables and benches in the entrance area and various tables and benches around the whole area. You can also try the Tarzan-track or enjoy the view from the 15m tall sculptured tower, created by the artist Thomas FOS Poulsen.

Danish National Archives (Danish: Rigsarkivet) is the national archive system of Denmark. The primary purpose is to collect, preserve and archive historically valuable records from central authorities, such as ministries, agencies and national organisations and make them available to the public. The archive is part of the Ministry of Culture.

Previously the term Danish State Archives (Danish: Statens Arkiver) was used as the collective name for the archive system. In 2014 the archives were reorganised, and the name Rigsarkivet (which had previously only applied to the Danish National Archives in Copenhagen) became the new collective name for the entire archive system.

Bistro Royal is located at the corner of Gothersgade and Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Bistro Royal is Madklubben’s elegant bistro on Kongens Nytorv, where the atmosphere is like in Paris, London and New York. At the best corner of the city, you can enjoy a wealth of French and Danish classics morning, noon and evening at prices that are well below the current level in this part of Copenhagen.

Kongens Nytorv (lit. “The King’s New Square”) is a public square in Copenhagen, Denmark, centrally located at the end of the pedestrian street Strøget. The largest square of the city, it was laid out by Christian V in 1670 in connection with a major extension of the fortified city, and has an equestrian statue of him at its centre. The initiative moved the centre of the city from the medieval area around Gammeltorv, at that time a muddy medieval marketplace, to a cobbled new square with a garden complex, inspired by the Royal city planning seen in Paris from the early 17th century.

Important buildings facing the square include the Royal Danish Theater from 1874, the Charlottenborg Palace from 1671 (now the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts), the Thott Palace from 1683 (now the French Embassy), the Hotel D’Angleterre and the Magasin du Nord department store.

Thorvaldsens Museum is located on Bertel Thorvaldsens Plads and Prins Jørgens Gård in Copenhagen – Denmark.

The Thorvaldsen Museum is a single-artist museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, dedicated to the art of Danish neoclassicistic sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844), who lived and worked in Rome for most of his life (1796–1838). The museum is located on the small island of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen next to Christiansborg Palace. Designed by Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, the building was constructed from 1838–48 following a public collection of funds in 1837.

The building is strongly inspired by antique Greek architecture and built around an inner courtyard where the artist is buried. The courtyard is notable for being painted in Egyptian motifs: tall date palms; lions and crocodile prowl among exotic birds and plants. The Egyptian influence on the exterior is more chaste. Here, enormous doors in severe trapezoidal style define the architect’s intentions to pay homage at once to Attic Greek, Pompeiian and Egyptian style. It is noteworthy for its unique use of colors both inside and outside. Every room in the museum has a unique ceiling decoration in the grotesque style. The outside is adorned with a frieze depicting Thorvaldsen’s homecoming from Rome in 1838, made by Jørgen Sonne.

Israels Plads is a large public square in central Copenhagen, Denmark, located in the area between Nørreport station and The Lakes. Its north end is home to a covered food market while the south end is currently subject to a comprehensive redesign which will integrate it with the adjoining Ørsted Park.

A design competition for the refurbishment of the southern portion of the square was won by the architectural firm Cobe in 2008. Their winning proposal introduces various facilities for street sports and performances as well as an organic integration with the adjoining park. The implementation of the project has been delayed due to a dispute with the owner of an underground parking facility but finally went under construction in 2012 and was completed in 2014.
