Montgomery Street is a north-south thoroughfare in San Francisco, in the United States.

It runs about 16 blocks from the Telegraph Hill neighborhood south through downtown, terminating at Market Street. South of Columbus Avenue, Montgomery Street runs through the heart of San Francisco’s Financial District. For this reason, it is sometimes called “the Wall Street of the West”.

In the 1830s, the land which is now Montgomery Street lay at the edge of San Francisco Bay. Intense land speculation during the Gold Rush created a demand for more usable land in the rapidly growing city, and sandy bluffs near the waterfront were leveled and the shallows filled with sand (and the ruins of many ships) to make new building lots. Between 1849 and 1852, the waterfront advanced about four blocks. At present, Montgomery Street is about seven blocks from the water.

The corner of Montgomery and Clay is where John B. Montgomery landed when he came to hoist the U.S. flag after the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846. In 1853 the Montgomery Block, a center of early San Francisco law and literature, was built at 600 Montgomery, on land currently occupied by the Transamerica Pyramid.

Many banks and financial-services companies have had offices in the buildings on or near Montgomery Street, especially between Market Street and Sacramento Street:
– The world headquarters of Wells Fargo are at 420 Montgomery.
– 555 California Street, between Kearny and Montgomery, served as Bank of America’s world headquarters prior to its merger with NationsBank and was (from 1969 to 2005) officially called the Bank of America Building.
– The Transamerica Pyramid (600 Montgomery, at Columbus Avenue) was the headquarters of Transamerica Corporation and still appears in the company’s logo.

Union Street is an east-west street in San Francisco that starts out at Montgomery Street, and runs through Russian Hill and Cow Hollow shopping district and ends in the Presidio in San Francisco.

It is the only east-west street that allows two-way traffic to traverse Russian Hill (all others have gaps or one-way segments). For this reason, the Muni 45-Union / Stockton and 41-Union bus lines, both utilizing Union Street, are the only Muni bus lines that cross Russian Hill east-west.

Union St is loacted in Telegraph Hill (elev. 84 m), a neighborhood in San Francisco, California. It is one of San Francisco’s 44 hills, and one of its original “Seven Hills.”

Telegraph Hill is primarily a residential area, much quieter than adjoining North Beach with its bustling cafés and nightlife. Aside from Coit Tower, it is well known for its gardens flowing down Filbert Street down to Levi Plaza.

Today Telegraph Hill is known for supporting a flock of feral parrots, primarily Red-masked Parakeets (Aratinga erythrogenys), descended from escaped or released pets. The flock was popularized by a book and subsequent documentary (2003), both titled The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.

The birds are native to Peru and Ecuador; they have established a breeding colony, with the support of some residents, as reported in the film The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, and through the help of volunteers with Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue. They range widely, including along The Embarcadero and in the Presidio.
A controversial San Francisco city ordinance passed on June 5, 2007, prohibits the feeding of parrots in public spaces. The feeding ban was championed by Mark Bittner, the birds’ most outspoken supporter who fed them for years and wrote the book The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. Other local conservationists also supported the ban, though some residents continue to object.

Mason Street is a street in downtown San Francisco in the Nob Hill district, close to Union Square.

Nob Hill is a neighborhood in centered on the intersection of California and Powell streets. It is one of San Francisco’s 44 hills, and one of its original “Seven Hills.”

The area was settled in the rapid urbanization happening in the city in the late 19th century. Because of the views and its central position, it became an exclusive enclave of the rich and famous on the west coast who built large mansions in the neighborhood. This included prominent tycoons such as Leland Stanford, founder of Stanford University and other members of The Big Four.

Nob Hill is an affluent district, home to many of the city’s upper-class families as well as a large young urban professional population, and a growing Chinese immigrant population from Chinatown to the east. Nob is a term in British slang that refers to an upper-class individual. The location is also derisively referred to as Snob Hill.

Union Square is public plaza bordered by Geary, Powell, Post and Stockton Streets in San Francisco, California. “Union Square” also refers to the central shopping, hotel, and theater district that surrounds the plaza for several blocks. The area got its name because it was once used for rallies and support for the Union Army during the American Civil War, earning its designation as a California Historical Landmark.
Today, this one-block plaza and surrounding area is one of the largest collections of department stores, upscale boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, and beauty salons in the United States, making Union Square a major tourist destination, a vital, cosmopolitan gathering place in downtown San Francisco, and one of the world’s premier shopping districts. Grand hotels and small inns, as well as repertory, off-Broadway, and single-act theaters also contribute to the area’s dynamic, 24-hour character.

Bi Fuel

March 1st, 2013

Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower. The tower is now officially called the Elizabeth Tower, after being renamed to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee.

The Elizabeth Tower holds the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world and is the third-tallest free-standing clock tower. The tower was completed in 1858 and had its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. The Elizabeth Tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of both London and England and is often in the establishing shot of films set in the city.

The Elizabeth Tower (previously called the Clock Tower) named in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in her Diamond Jubilee year – was raised as a part of Charles Barry’s design for a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire on the night of 16 October 1834.

The new Parliament was built in a Neo-gothic style. Although Barry was the chief architect of the Palace, he turned to Augustus Pugin for the design of the clock tower, which resembles earlier Pugin designs, including one for Scarisbrick Hall. The design for the Elizabeth Tower was Pugin’s last design before his final descent into madness and death, and Pugin himself wrote, at the time of Barry’s last visit to him to collect the drawings: “I never worked so hard in my life for Mr Barry for tomorrow I render all the designs for finishing his bell tower & it is beautiful.” The tower is designed in Pugin’s celebrated Gothic Revival style, and is 96.0 m high (roughly 16 storeys).

The origin of the nickname Big Ben is the subject of some debate. The nickname was applied first to the Great Bell; it may have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw the installation of the Great Bell, or after boxing’s English Heavyweight Champion Benjamin Caunt. Now Big Ben is often used, by extension, to refer to the clock, the tower and the bell collectively, although the nickname is not universally accepted as referring to the clock and tower. Some authors of works about the tower, clock and bell sidestep the issue by using the words Big Ben first in the title, then going on to clarify that the subject of the book is the clock and tower as well as the bell.

The Reguliersgracht is an canal in the center of Amsterdam, it connects the Herengracht with the Lijnbaansgracht. The canal with its typical canal houses is part of the second phase of the canal development plan, which was built from 1658. It was originally intended to be a street and not a canal. In 1664 the canal was ready for building. The Reguliersgracht is named after the Regular monastery, that between 1394 and 1532 stood outside the Regulierspoort, approximately at the place where now the Utrechtsestraat and Keizersgracht intersect.

The canal began at the current Reguliersbreestraat. The part to the Herengracht in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries muted. Here is now the Thorbeckeplein.

Reguliersgracht means “regulator’s canal.”

The canal gets its name from the Reguliersklooster, a convent that stood nearby from 1394 to 1532. Both of these names come from the Regulierspoort, one of the gates of medieval, walled Amsterdam, just west of Rembrandtplein (where the Munttoren now stands).

The city dug this canal in 1664, as Amsterdam expanded to accommodate its exploding population.

Zevenbruggen Reguliersgracht Amsterdam

The canal is famous for its seven humpbacked bridges, which give the Seven Bridges Hotel and the Seven Bridges Jazz Festival their names.

Amsterdam city planners began filling in canals in the late 19th century to accommodate increasing horse-and-carriage traffic. Fierce community protest saved the Reguliersgracht and its beloved bridges from this fate in 1901.

Greene Street is a street in Soho in New York City, USA.

SoHo is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, notable for being the location of many artists’ lofts and art galleries, and also, more recently, for the wide variety of stores and shops ranging from trendy boutiques to outlets of upscale national and international chain stores. The area’s history is an archetypal example of inner-city regeneration and gentrification, encompassing socio-economic, cultural, political and architectural developments.

Almost all of SoHo is included in the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District, which was designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1973, extended in 2010, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978.[3] It consists of 26 blocks and approximately 500 buildings,[4] many of them incorporating cast iron architectural elements. The side streets in the district are notable for being paved with Belgian blocks.

LV Greene Street SoHo NYC

The name “SoHo” refers to the area being “SOuth of HOuston (Street)”, and was also a reference to the London district of Soho. It was coined by Chester Rapkin, an urban planner who was the author of the “South Houston Industrial Area” study, also known as the “Rapkin Report”. This began a naming convention which has become a model for the names of new, emerging and re-purposed neighborhoods in New York such as TriBeCa for “TRIangle BElow CAnal Street”, NoHo (“NOrth of HOuston Street”), DUMBO (“Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”), Nolita (“NOrth of Little ITAly”) and NoMad (“NOrth of MADison Square”), among others.

Woodstock is the shire town and capital of Windsor County, Vermont, in the United States.

The Woodstock Village Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It includes the village center and additional properties along the Ottauquechee River. The district covers an area of 11.1 km2 encompassing 95 buildings, sites, and structures that contribute to the historical significance of the area.

The center of the district is an elliptical village green located at the junction of U.S. Route 4 and Vermont Route 106. Around the green and along the main road following the river are a number of residential, commercial, and public buildings showcasing architectural development from the late 18th to late 19th centuries. The district also includes the Billings Farm and Museum.

In 2011 the Downtown Woodstock Streetscape was listed by the American Planning Association (APA) as a “2011 Great Place in America” under the “Streets” category. The APA specifically focuses on streets that are complete, meaning that the street services all forms of use and not just vehicle use.

2013 – Bentley Restaurant in Woodstock

Bentley Restaurant in Woodstock is a landmark for over 30 years, Bentleys serves Lunch, Dinner & Sunday Brunch in a warm, eclectic atmosphere filled with Victorian sofas, oriental rugs & antique lamps. Bentleys also features dancing every Saturday night, occasional live entertainment and their very own custom brewed ale.

Bentley started in 1765… That was the year in which Timothy Knox built Woodstock’s first dwelling, a small cabin a few miles south of what is now the village green. The French & Indian wars had ended and with the peace came a new wave of settlement. Knox was reported to have been broken-hearted from a failed romance when he struck out for the hinterlands. Perhaps he found solace in the solitude, but he wasn’t alone for long…

Two hundred & nine years later Bill Deckelbaum & David Creech opened The Mountain Trading Company on Elm Street in Woodstock. They started out selling plants, pottery, crafts, anything they could “trade.” Bill, an ice cream devotee, discovered a tasty new product called “Haagen-Dazs.” Knowing in his entrepreneurial heart that this was something Woodstock could not do without, he began importing the ice cream (packed in dry ice) to Vermont from New York City in the back of his station wagon. Having expanded the shop to include an old fashioned soda fountain, Bill & David found many of their customers asking, “Where do you get something to eat around here?” They decided it might be fun to open a restaurant…

Since 1976, Bentleys Restaurant has been serving the people of Woodstock, New England & beyond. After all these years it seems we’re still doing something right, not so much because the critics say so, but because you are here. Well, virtually anyway…When you do pay us a visit, sit back and relax, and perhaps raise a glass to Mr. Timothy Knox, the first visitor to Woodstock who decided to call it home.
