Times Square is a major commercial intersection in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. Times Square – iconified as “The Crossroads of the World”, “The Center of the Universe”, and the “The Great White Way” – is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway theater district, one of the world’s busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world’s entertainment industry.

According to Travel + Leisure magazine’s October 2011 survey, Times Square is the world’s most visited tourist attraction, hosting over 39 million visitors annually. Approximately 300,000 people pass through Times Square daily.

The building on the left is the Bertelsmann Building, originally known as 1540 Broadway, a 42-story, 223 m office tower in Times Square in Manhattan, New York City, standing at West 45th Street. The building is the North American headquarters of Bertelsmann.

Started in 1989 and finished in 1990, the tower is one of the few in Times Square to contain class A office space. Also found in the tower is Planet Hollywood’s first Official All Star Café, and also there’s Mac Flagship, Disney Store, and Forever 21.

In the 1990s the Bertelsmann subsidiary of Random House looked to build a skyscraper across 45th Street from its parent and be connected to it via a neon-lighted bridge across 45th Street connecting them. When the deal fell through it built the Random House Tower 10 blocks uptown.
Loew’s State Theatre (1921) formerly occupied the site of the Bertelsmann Building. Before Loew’s, the Bartholdi Inn (1899), then New York’s best-known theatrical boarding house, was there.

West 8th Street and Broadway are streets in the Historic Core and Broadway District in Los Angeles, USA.

The Historic Core District is a neighborhood in Downtown Los Angeles between Hill and Main streets on the west and east, and 3rd and 9th streets on the north and south.

The Broadway Theater District in Downtown Los Angeles is the first and largest historic theater district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With twelve movie palaces located along a six-block stretch of Broadway, it is the only large concentration of movie palaces left in the United States.

Stretching for six blocks from Third to Ninth Streets along South Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles, the district includes 12 movie theaters built between 1910 and 1931. By 1931, the district had the highest concentration of cinemas in the world, with seating capacity for more than 15,000 patrons. Broadway was the hub of L.A.’s entertainment scene – a place where “screen goddesses and guys in fedoras rubbed elbows with Army nurses and aircraft pioneers.

Bari is the capital city of the province of Bari and of the Apulia (or, in Italian, Puglia) region, on the Adriatic Sea, in Italy. It is the second most important economic centre of mainland Southern Italy after Naples, and is well known as a port and university city, as well as the city of Saint Nicholas.

Bari is made up of four different urban sections. To the north is the closely built old town on the peninsula between two modern harbours, with the splendid Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the Cathedral of San Sabino (1035–1171) and the Swabian Castle built for Frederick II, which is now also a major nightlife district. To the south is the Murat quarter (erected by Joachim Murat), the modern heart of the city, which is laid out on a rectangular grid-plan with a promenade on the sea and the major shopping district (the via Sparano and via Argiro).

Modern residential zones surround the centre of Bari, the result of chaotic development during the 1960s and 1970s replacing the old suburbs that had developed along roads splaying outwards from gates in the city walls. In addition, the outer suburbs have developed rapidly during the 1990s. The city has a redeveloped airport named after Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyła Airport, with connections to several European cities.

Located in Los Angeles, California, the Sepulveda Dam is a project of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, built in 1941 to withhold winter flood waters along the Los Angeles River. It is located south of center in the San Fernando Valley, about eight miles east of the river’s official source in the western end of the Valley.

Sepulveda Dam, along with Hansen Dam in the north San Fernando Valley, was constructed after the historic 1938 floods on the Los Angeles River which killed 144 people. Sepulveda Dam was placed at the then current edge of the city (1940)–east of the dam the river was crowded into a narrow bottom by the city’s growth.

2013 - Sepulveda Dam in Los Angeles, USA

2013 – Sepulveda Dam in Los Angeles, USA

One legacy of Sepulveda Dam is the huge undeveloped area in the center of the Valley—used for wildlife and urban park. But another legacy of the 1938 Los Angeles River flood was the post-WWII channelization of all the Valley’s dry washes, which along with the post-WWII rapid suburbanization left the Valley with hot dry concrete-lined river bottoms, instead of greenbelts and connecting bikepaths.

2013 - Sepulveda Basin in Los Angeles, USA (Google Maps

2013 – Sepulveda Basin in Los Angeles, USA (Google Maps

Behind the dam, the Sepulveda Basin is home to several large recreation areas and parks, a model aircraft field, The Japanese Garden, a wildlife refuge, a water reclamation plant and an armory. The Basin is kept free of urban over-building so that water can build up there during a prospective hundred-year flood.

It’s an often-used location for car commercials.

On October 12-14 2004 at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum in Shanghai, Volvo Car Corporation unveiled their 3CC prototype.

From the outside, the Volvo 3CC has an iconic funky-cool tapered shape designed to make a dynamic statement that nonetheless is unmistakably Volvo. Under the hood is an electric powertrain that quietly propels the Volvo 3CC to a governed top speed of over 135 km/h and delivers zero to 100 km/h acceleration in approximately ten seconds – with zero emissions!

Just 3899 mm long, 1624 mm wide and 1321 mm high, the Volvo 3CC has dimensions similar to a classic 2-seater sports car – but that is where similarities end. For the sporty vehicle packs a surprise: a unique two-plus-one configuration, providing seating for two adults in the front and a unique rear seat solution for an additional adult or two children.

This 3-seat configuration provides a unique experience with regards to the occupants’ communication, unprecedented rear occupant’s comfort and all-around visibility for all passengers.

2013 – Corran ferry crossing Loch Linnhe to Ardgour, Scotland, UK (Google Streetview)

The Corran Ferry crosses Loch Linnhe at the Corran Narrows, south of Fort William, Scotland.

Operated by Highland Council, the Corran Ferry is one of few remaining mainland vehicle ferries in Scotland. The route crosses Loch Linnhe from Nether Lochaber to Ardgour, at the Corran Narrows, nine miles south of Fort William.

It was noted for the unusual sign “This is not the Ballachulish Ferry”.
The ferry links the main A82 road with Morvern, Moidart and Ardnamurchan, via the village of Strontian. It also provides a link to Lochaline, thirty miles to the south west, from where a ferry crosses to Mull. Close to the western slipway are Corran Lighthouse and the Ardgour Inn. The route lies on one of the ancient drove routes from the Hebrides to the cattle markets in Central Scotland.

Loch Linnhe is a sea loch on the west coast of Scotland.
Loch Linnhe is about 50 kilometres long. It opens onto the Firth of Lorne at its south-western end. The part of the loch upstream of Corran is 15 kilometres long and only about an average of 2 kilometres wide. The southern part of the loch is wider, and its branch which lies to the south-east of the island of Lismore is known as the Lynn of Lorne. Loch Eil feeds into Loch Linnhe at the latter’s northernmost point, while from the east Loch Leven feeds in the loch just downstream of Corran and Loch Creran feeds into the Lynn of Lorne. The town of Fort William lies at the northeast end of the loch, at the mouth of the River Lochy. During the summer months, Loch Linnhe is perpendicular with the setting sun, making it a popular location for photographers.

Corran Lighthouse Lodge is situated on the shoreline of Loch Linnhe, a beautiful tidal sea loch on the West Coast of Scotland near Fort William. From the Lodge there are fabulous views down Loch Linnhe across to the magnificent Glencoe mountain range and Ben Nevis.

The Lodge is converted from the original lighthouse keepers’ cottages into luxurious self catering holiday accommodation providing 5 double or twin en-suite bedrooms, a large elegant lounge with wood burning stove and a charming country kitchen. The large private walled garden is perfect for barbecues and has direct access to the beach. There are excellent amenities in the village of Ardgour and nearby Fort William.

Corran Lighthouse was built in 1860 by Thomas and David Stevenson, father and uncle to Robert Louis Stevenson. The Lighthouse is still working, albeit without the fog horn and is operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board.

Fort street is a street in downtown Auckland, New Zealand. Is was known as a dangerous and risque neighbourhood and was best known for crime, brothels, stripclubs, backpackers and the White Lady burger cart.

But this rough diamond has been transformed from grit to glam with work to open a swanky new entertainment precinct.

The historic Imperial Buildings, which housed Auckland’s first big movie theatres, has being renovated into a glitzy mall running from Fort Lane to Queen St, with new wine bars, silver-service restaurants, shops and character offices built around an inner courtyard.

The downtown area near Fort Lane was named the “most dangerous spot for random street violence” by Metro in 2010. But the area has become Auckland’s answer to the Meatpacking District in New York which went from the city’s hub of illicit activity to its trendiest bar neighbourhood.

The Auckland metropolitan area, in the North Island of New Zealand, is the largest and most populous urban area in the country.

Auckland’s lifestyle is influenced by the fact that while it is 70% rural in land area, 90% of Aucklanders live in urban areas – though large parts of these areas have a more suburban character than many cities in Europe and Asia.

Positive aspects of Auckland life are its mild climate, plentiful employment and educational opportunities, as well as numerous leisure facilities.

Slope Point is the southernmost point of the South Island of New Zealand.

Slope Point lies just south of the small settlements of Waikawa and Haldane, near the southwestern edge of the Catlins and Toetoes Bay and 70 km east of Invercargill.

The land around Slope Point is used for sheep farming with no houses anywhere nearby. Eroded cliffs drop down to the sea below. An AA signpost there shows the distance to the Equator and the South Pole, and a small solar-powered lighthouse stands on farmland.

There is no road to Slope Point; it must be reached by a 20-minute walk following dilapidated yellow markers. There is no public access during the lambing season (September – November).

The Catlins (sometimes referred to as The Catlins Coast) comprises an area in the southeastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand. The area lies between Balclutha and Invercargill, straddling the boundary between the Otago and Southland regions. It includes the South Island’s southernmost point, Slope Point.

A rugged, sparsely populated area, the Catlins features a scenic coastal landscape and dense temperate rainforest, both of which harbour many endangered species of birds, most notably the rare yellow-eyed penguin. The coast attracts numerous marine mammals, among them New Zealand fur seals and Hooker’s sea lions. In general terms the area enjoys a maritime temperate climate. Its exposed location leads to its frequently wild weather and heavy ocean swells, which are an attraction to big-wave surfers, and have also caused numerous shipwrecks.

Villefranche-sur-Mer is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region on the French Riviera.

Villefranche-sur-Mer adjoins the city of Nice to the east along Mont Boron, Mont Alban and Mont Vinaigrier, and 10 km south west of Monaco. The bay of Villefranche is one of the deepest natural harbours of any port in the Mediterranean Sea and provides safe anchorage for large ships, reaching depths of 95 m between the Cape of Nice and Cap Ferrat; it extends to the south to form a 500 m abyss known as the undersea Canyon of Villefranche at about one nautical mile off the coastline.

Since the 1980s Villefranche has been used by cruise ships. It is the most visited cruise ship port of call in France.

The main activity remains tourism with hotels and restaurants employing a sizeable portion of the population. Traditional activities like fishing has now given way to sea related activities such as sailing and deep sea diving. Some dockyard activity remains at the harbour of “la Darse” but most of it has now been moved to Antibes. Residential construction and maintenance, which provided a lot of employment in the mid 20th century, has now subsided considerably.

La Mère Germaine

La Mère Germaine’ Restaurant in Villefranche-sur-Mer, a major gourmet landmark on the French Riviera since 1938. “When I look at Villefranche,I can see my youth. May Man never allow it to change,” said the poet and artist Jean Cocteau of this place of legend.

It was in this fishing port between Nice and Monaco that La Mère Germaine choose to locate her restaurant in 1938. On the waterfront, unique site on the French Riviera this House fits perfectly in the tradition of fine tables, hospitality, comfort and gastronomy: specialities of fish and seafood, its famous bouillabaisse, one of the best in the Region.
At Villefranche-sur-Mer, we always strive to remain on a par with this exceptional site where it is such a privilege to live.

The Mesquit Street is a street in downtown Los Angeles, USA near the East 6th Street with the famous Sixt Street Viaduct.

The Sixth Street Viaduct is a viaduct bridge that connects the downtown and Boyle Heights areas of Los Angeles, California. It spans the Los Angeles River, the Santa Ana Freeway (US 101), and the Golden State Freeway (I-5), as well as Metrolink and Union Pacific railroad tracks and several local streets. The viaduct is composed of three independent structures: the reinforced concrete west segment, the central steel arch segment over the river, and the reinforced concrete east segment.

Under the Sixt Street Bridge LA

In 1986, the Caltrans bridge survey found the 6th Street Viaduct eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

During the construction of the viaduct, an on-site plant was used to supply the concrete for construction. However, the quality of the concrete turned out to have a high alkali content and lead to an alkali-silica reaction which creates cracks in the concrete and saps the strength of the structure.
Estimates are that the viaduct has a 70% probability of collapse due to a major earthquake within 50 years. It is one of the only historic LA River bridges to suffer from ASR (alkali-silica reaction).

Old Sixt Street Bridge LA

This bridge is seen a lot in many films (To Live and Die in L.A., Grease, Terminator 2 & 3, Repo Man etc), music videos (Madonna video for What It Feels Like For A Girl single, INXS video for Afterglow, Kanye West video for Jesus Walks, Chris Brown video for Deuces, Cheryl Cole video for “Call My Name” to name a few) and tv shows (Lost episode of Through the Looking Glass, 24 – Season 3 – Episode 22, Hunter – season 7 episode, L.A. Heat episode “Little Saigon” and Melrose Place – Pilot).

Since the 80-year-old viaduct is dying from the inside due to a chemical reaction in the concrete called Alkali Silica Reaction, the city of Los Angeles has decioded to replace the bridge with a new one.

The “infrastructure” firm HNTB has won the city’s international design competition for the new bridge that will replace the decaying concrete 6th Street Viaduct over the Los Angeles River. “The new 6th Street Bridge will be a world-class, iconic piece of Los Angeles infrastructure because of this international design competition and the community’s involvement every step of the way,” Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says in a statement. “Los Angeles is where the world creates and innovates, and the selection of HNTB as the winning team reaffirms our ability to cultivate and attract the best and brightest in architecture, design, and engineering right here in Los Angeles.” Villaraigosa and Councilman Jose Huizar had a media event out at the bridge this morning.

New Sixt Street Bridge LA USA

Construction of the new 6th street bridge is planned for 2015 and should be finished in 2018.
